Condition of use: By accessing the chat room, you acknowledge that you have read and accept the medical disclaimer and chatroom logging statements contained within the red box towards the bottom of this page.

What is the chat room?
The Ostomyland Chat Room is an IRC (internet relay chat) powered chat room where people from all over the World can join in with impromptu off-topic chat sessions, or, where they can attend our weekly ostomy support chat meetings.

When is the chat room open?
The chat room is available 24/7 and we have a weekly ostomy support meeting on Saturdays at 8pm UK time which is approximately 3pm in east coast USA. Check the clock banner at the bottom of the page to find out what the current UK time is. Please note though, that although the chat room is open 24/7 is dont not mean that people are in there 24/7. Also, sometimes people like to connect to the chat room and then go to bed, or to work etc, in which case some people may have a nickname saying that they are away from their computer. So if no one is around, or if everyone is marked away, try a different time of day, or another day totally. Please also note that “Pooh” and “Dory” are chat room robots, and as such will not talk to you.

How do I join in?
Connecting to the chat room could not be easier as it has been incorperated within our message board, meaning you can access the chat room from there with just one click and NO messy setup is required!

But, if you have your own IRC client on your computer (such as mIRC) then you can still use that by checking out the Advanced IRC Users section below.

Here’s a step by step guide to connecting to our chat room using the message board.
1. Go to our message board at http://www.ostomyland.org/ostomyboardipb/ – if you have an account already make sure you sign-in to it, and if you don’t have an account please register an account first and then sign-in to it. (You can tell when you are logged in because your user name appears in the top right hand side of the message board page, instead of the Sign In – Register – Help buttons.

2. Click on the Chat Room tab. You will now be taken to the chat room page, where the java chat client will load up and automatically connect to the chat server and join the chat room. Once you see a list of names on the right hand side of the  client you know that you are logged in.

3. To chat to other people, click on the white input bar at the bottom of the chat room client and type your message. Hit the enter/carriage-return key on your keyboard to send the message to the room.

And that’s it. You are connected and chatting!

If you need help with the chat client please visit the Chat Room Help & FAQ forum on the message board at:

    Hi Diana,

Sorry you dont like the new board Diana. If you can send me your email address I will help you tweak things privately so that you can get them how you like them. I have seen your complaint on the board about the new chat format and the board’s text size

The reason that I had to retire the old java chat is because the old java client ceased development, and the security certificate has now expired. It was no longer providing secure connections and could possibly leave the user open to hacking attacks.

However, if you are prepared to accept those risks, and absolve me/ostomyland of any responsibility to any damage that may occur (but is probably unlikely) then you can find the old java chat clients here: http://ostomyland.com/mainsite/jpilot-java-chat/

With respect to the boards chatroom font size – this can be increased by the user at anytime. Once connected to the chat room, click on the FONT button, to open a small font-settings window, and enter a larger number in the little box that is there. I’d recommend increasing the number by 2 repeatedly until the the text is at a size you can read.

With respect to mIRC and Windows 7. It works fine, I’m using it. So you could alternatively give that a try – and with mIRC you have complete control over the background colours, font colours, font choice, font size, everything really. And Im happy to talk through the setting up of this via emails if you need help. Have you tried using mIRC and been receiving errors? If so, if you let me know what they are, I’ll research them for you and see if we can fix them for you.

As mentioned in my reply to your message on the message board, I’m going to look around on the net to see if there is a modification available for IPB forums that allows the user to control the font size – at the moment, as you have probably noticed, there is no option for increased font size. I dont know if a mod exists, but if one does I’ll try it out and let you know when/if it goes live on the board.

Also as mentioned in my reply to your message over on the board I do realise that there has been some disquiet over the removal of the old jpilot java chat system (change is never easy to deal with, whatever it may be). And despite the security certificate issues, I’m hoping (and I stress “hoping”) that I might still be able to bring it back into service in a secure and safe way.

Theres two ways that the old java chat system can be used safely. 1) Buy my own security certificate ($599 every year) – or – 2) buy my own chat server and install the java chat on that, so that the need for a security certificate is no longer required.

At the moment i’m still researching how much it’s going to cost me to hire a chat server (I believe they are cheaper than $599 lol), and what is involved in the set up etc, please everyone dont start getting your hopes up yet, its still early days. But I am looking into trying to bring it back safely. So please bear with me.

Thanks for the feedback Diana. You can reach me at webmaster@ostomyland.com if you need any help with anything I’ve mentioned here or wish to discuss matters further.

    Best wishes,
