thank you to everyone that replied so far!

First, please do not post anything you do not wish to share, I want this to be a safe environment, I am only here to learn. I am well versed in HIPPA and will NOT use anyone’s name for my assignment to protect everyone’s identity. Below I have explained my project in more detail:

Just wanted to explain my project a little more. As part of an “in your shoes” lab assignment, all the students were required to wear an ostomy bag filled with fake fecal matter for 24 hrs. Then, they had to write a journal entry and post that to our class discussion board. All the products my professor had were latex and since I’m allergic she gave me an alternate assignment (which brings me here). After I ask a support group what they wish their nurse had told me, I am supposed to also write a journal entry about what I learned on the class discussion board. Again this is strictly for mine and my classmates learning purposes. I will NOT use anyone’s names or information in my journal post.

Thank you all again for the comments, I will take this information to heart so I can be a better nurse for someone in the future.

Oh so there is something out there. My husband has been struggling with leaks for months and now he has an ileostomy and the leaks are re-occurring but not quite so often. This will help when he goes back to work. Thanks Jason – brilliant article – thank you.

What a great article. Very comprehensive and clearly written. I found the last part on the “flange extenders” greatly helpful as I had been given one and had no real idea of its use!! I will immediately put it with my “kit”.

I am very confused. This something New or it was there before. How do I get more information? So they only do this type surgery in UK or in the United States??

However the operation is not suitable for those with advanced bowel cancer, or severely damaged sphincter muscles.

I knew this surgery was available when i had my colostomy 5 years ago. I was not one of the lucky ones due to the fact the cancer had eaten into the sphincter. Just my luck. I hope other’s are luckier than i and how wonderful and how far the medical field has come.
