The BBC is reporting that a brief one-off test screening for bowel cancer could prevent thousands of people dying from the disease each year – cutting the death rate by a staggering 43%.
The study that the BBC is reporting about was published in medical journal The Lancet which also suggests that these tests should be rolled out across the UK.
For the full report please check out Clare Murphy’s report on the BBC News website.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel has published an article about “The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Society” celebrating WOC Nurse week (April 18th to 24th 2010). They report that the national society has asked its local members to help raise awareness for this nursing specialty.
From the report at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel:
“I’ve been certified as a [WOC] nurse for 11 years. Before that I was just a registered nurse since 1984,” said Cathy Phillips, a WOC nurse at Palms West Hospital in Loxahatchee. “I like it now so much because there is such a community need for it. I just liked that type of patient and it’s great to see the obvious results of the wound healing.”

Fittleworth is the founding member of the World Assist Alliance. This is an international network of delivery companies. All organisations are dedicated to the delivery of stoma and continence appliances to the customer.
Each member has signed up to a promise, that should you have any problems with your products while in their country, they will help you out with emergency supplies of appliances and in most locations, specialist nursing advice if required.
The World Assist Alliance service is free for the supply of goods in emergencies. There is no need for a prescription and you do not need to claim on your insurance or complete any forms or paperwork.
During the current exceptional circumstances with air travel, we are making this service available to any stoma or continence patient who finds themselves stranded without product.
Normally this service is reserved for Fittleworth customers only.
How does it work?
1. Simply contact Fittleworth in the UK informing them of your issue, your requirements and your location.
2. They will then contact their overseas delivery partner in that country and organise for a local delivery to be made to your temporary accommodation as soon as possible.

Ostomyland is free of subscription charges for all members. Always has been, and always will be while I am at the helm. But with the credit crunch, the hosting fees of Ostomyland has risen dramatically. We have two hosting accounts, and both have to be renewed in the first half of 2010. I’ve renewed the first one of them already, and thanks to the weakness of the UK pound against the US Dollar (where our hosting is located) the bill increased from just over £72 last time I paid it, to £114 this time for two years hosting. And the remaining account will be a similar amount when it comes up for renewal in June. But lets not forget the domain name renewals, and the quarterly chat security bot rentals too along with software costs! It all adds to the running costs.
We do not have sponsors here at Oland, but its not because we havent had interest in sponsorship deals from companies, instead it is an active choice to make sure the site remains unbias and independent and so we can give you the best advice and recommendations for YOU and not for the sponsors. So, aside from the feeble bit of money that comes in from the google adverts, all fees come out of my wallet. This is where donations from readers become a huge help.
If you enjoy Ostomyland please consider donating towards our running costs. It helps us so much. Donations from previous members have allowed us to help todays members, so by donating you help secure the site’s future for the next batch of members to the site.
For details on how to donate please visit: http://ostomyland.com/mainsite/donations/
(Donations are accepted via paypal only at this time, and they are 100% secure and safe thanks to PPs security protocols.)
Ostomyland has created a Fan Page on Facebook to help promote the online ostomy support services we offer over all our various sites – such as the main site, the forums, our facebook group (seperate to the fan page) and out twitter page.
The more fans we have, the more impressive an image the Ostomyland community and brand will get with it’s page.
If you enjoy Oland and are a FB member, please consider becoming a Fan of Ostomyland, by visiting our fan page at: www.facebook.com/ostomyland and clicking on the Become A Fan button. It looks like this:
Please note that this fan page DOES NOT REPLACE our existing Facebook group, which is the main support location for Ostomyland on Facebook and where you should go if you are looking for ostomy support from the Ostomyland community within Facebook. The fan page itself is purely to promote the services we offer and is a way to keep people who enjoy our website up to date with all the latest developments with our website community and of course the Ostomyland brand.
Thanks folks! Becoming a fan of Ostomyland will really help us in so many ways, so thanks in advance if you become one! I know I’m a big fan of all you guys and gals of the Oland community.
From your adoring fan,
Jason :D
